It's normally clocked at 3.5 GHz but Falcon also has a liquid cooling solution that lets them overclock the processor up to 4.3 GHz. You'll get a PC that suits your needs, it will be professionally assembled, painted as you'd like, and well supported for years. We received a model of the Tiki that was configured with, among other things, an Asus P8Z77-I Deluxe Mini ITX motherboard, with an Intel Core i7 3770K processor. This aspirational build will be out of price reach of most buyers, but you can configure a more affordable system and be confident in the relative performance. The Talon's components do the talking here. Its appearance doesn't scream super-premium with windows or the eye-popping lighting of other exorbitantly priced desktops, though you can dress it up with a flashy paint job. The case isn't fancy, but it's functional. This PC is incredibly fast in all areas, safe enough in design that it shouldn't turn off many potential buyers, and isn't too large. It's difficult to find too much fault in the 2018 Talon. You'd be getting better punch from this desktop if you have multiple demanding needs, but need is relative when spending in this price range, and you may very well just be looking for a luxury gaming system. Buying such an expensive system, whether it's the Talon or a competitor, just for gaming is probably overkill. Gaming aside, if you want to use the Talon as your professional video creation or animation machine, you'd be hard pressed to find better hardware for the job. Take the 1080p scores, for example, which hit 215fps on Heaven and 116fps on Valley on the same quality settings. Needless to say, if the Talon is posting more than 90fps at 4K, the frames will run fast and free at lower resolutions. Resolutions like 1440p may be ideal for your gaming monitor of choice, so you may be less concerned with 4K performance. On the whole, this machine can power through media projects as well or better than any other PC we've tested, blowing away professional systems like the Apple iMac Pro. With its Handbrake video-encoding score, the Talon is the first PC to break below the 20-second barrier, and its Cinebench showing was similarly impressive. Its PCMark Work Conventional score is among the highest we've seen, though that's not where the many-core CPU really shines. The beefy hardware helped the PC to ace all of our benchmark tests, from general productivity to multimedia tasks. No surprise given its components, this Talon is an incredible performer. Falcon Northwest supports the Talon with a three-year parts and labor warranty, and one year of overnight shipping for repairs. The video cards each provide three DisplayPort connections and one HDMI port. Around back, you get 10 USB 3.0 ports, a USB port for BIOS flash, a USB-C port, and two Ethernet jacks. The power button is on the front of the system, just above a swinging panel that hides a DVD drive and seven other open bays for potential drive additions. Ports are mostly located on the rear panel, but a pair of USB 3.0 connections and headset jacks live on the top panel toward the front of the PC for easy access. This unit comes with a classy dark red automotive paint job, but you can request any color or color combination you'd like when ordering. There are plenty of ostentatious gaming systems out there, and I appreciate some design restraint. The Talon's design is on the more understated side, which is a plus for me. Few will be able to manage the close-to-five digit price of our test PC, but configuring a less expensive build will still yield impressive results. That said, the PC still looks quite classy, and the case is easy to maneuver. While other premium desktops tout flashy case designs the Talon's construction is relatively simplistic. Outfitted with some of the fastest components on the market, this system sets benchmark records and is a class-leader in pretty much any use case. With its 2018 Talon (starts at $2,370 $8,626 as tested) Falcon Northwest achieves fantastic results. The beauty of high-end gaming desktops is extreme configurability, and this is especially true when buying from a boutique company that builds to order. A key feature of the official Puppy releases is that they’re modular. Each of the different Puppy distros come with their unique features. Unlike most distros, Puppy Linux is not a single distro but rather a collection of several distros, some official and some put together by its community of users. Puppy is built from the ground up and has grown beyond its original mandate of resurrecting older hardware that had been rendered useless due to lack of support in other mainstream distributions. One of our all-time favorites, Puppy Linux is one of the first of the miniscule distros that had its first release way back in 2003. However, you do get the option to start a fresh session from the boot menu. By default, the live session is persistent, which automatically saves all changes made to the Live environment. For example, you can use it to copy the entire live environment to RAM, which requires more than 768 MB of system memory, boot Porteus in text mode, initialize a PXE server, or access the PLoP boot manager. The Porteus boot menu offers some interesting options. The mechanism to transfer Porteus onto a USB is the same as Slax: loopback mount the ISO and copy its contents onto an EXT4 formatted disk before running a script from inside the USB to make it bootable. This is because the distro exists in a compressed state on the storage media and the familiar Linux directory structure is created on the fly during boot. The ISOs of most editions weigh in around 300MB each. Porteus is available as seven separate ISO images, each with a different desktop – from the heavyweight KDE and Cinnamon to the lightweight LXQt, LXDE and Openbox and others. On writable mediums, Porteus will save all changes inside a folder and load them on subsequent boots. Porteus is a portable distro designed and optimized to run from removable media such as a USB flash drive, SD card or even optical media like a CD. You can also flesh out the distro using mintInstall package manager. These are complimented by several traditional desktop apps as well such as the Firefox web browser. In the latest release, Ice now has support for isolated profiles for Firefox, Chromium, Chrome, and Vivaldi SSBs.Ī number of web apps are set up out of the box, including Microsoft Office Online, Google apps and which uses WebGL to provide a glorious 3D chess experience. The SSB webapps have a minimal browser interface and some of them really look well integrated into the desktop. Peppermint’s USP is the home-brewed tool called ICE, which can turn websites into web apps, technically known as Site Specific Browsers or SSBs, and roll them into the application menu. It also uses Xfce’s window manager, menu and panel, keeping to the traditional desktop metaphor, while still allowing a few modern conveniences like type-to-search in the menu. This is a fast and lightweight distro that uses the LXDE desktop, although its developers are quite happy to cherry pick elements from other desktops, such as the use of the Nemo file manager from Cinnamon for its handling of network shares. Peppermint is a lightweight Linux distro based mostly from packages in the Ubuntu repositories along with some key components from Linux Mint. You can use it to free up memory, remove older kernels and install new ones. One of the most useful ones is Lite Tweaks, which helps users with common admin tasks. There’s a welcome screen that enables users to install updates and drivers, and set up a backup restore point, a program to help upgrade to the latest release, and another to manage users. In fact, the distro includes several homebrewed Lite-branded tools for interacting and customizing various aspects of the desktop and the installation. On top of this you can also easily pull in other popular programs such as Kodi, Skype, Steam, Spotify and more using the custom Lite Software application. Its list of pre-installed programs doesn’t include any of the traditional lightweight apps and is instead brimming with the usual suspects such as GIMP, Firefox, VLC and LibreOffice. Linux Lite looks and feels like a regular mainstream distro. The distro offers a good compromise between speed and functionality, and exposes all useful desktop features while still being responsive and fast. The Ubuntu-based distro uses the Xfce desktop with aesthetically pleasing modifications. In our opinion, Linux Lite is one of the best options for accelerating regular desktop Linux tasks. Long story short, it really looks like Adobe needs to implement an actual CinemaDNG native support feature! It is useless as of right now. The issue is Premiere defines them as something like Rec709, and that is technically baked in (although still with the raw file) when sent to Speedgrade. For my own projects, I created my own default LUT for the 4K Pocket. That look may or may not be what you are going for. That is what the 'Extended Video' LUT is for it preserves more of that data for REC709 display. If I use Direct Link (Import in Premiere, then send it to Speedgrade), the timeline configurations (colorspace, etc) are greyed out as they dont let you edit the options, as it is 'linked' and Premiere predefines those settings. However, we all the know the 4K Pocket can capture much more dynamic range than a traditional television camera. not supported) I am trying to mess around with the Timeline Colorspace, and get nothing close to a usable image. You start with the rec709 image, in the first node you apply the rec709 to linear lut. In addition the A6300 like most cameras cannot see the full S-Gamut or S-Gamut3 range.
